Reiwa Beginning of a New Dawn

Come 1 May 2019, Japan will officially be starting a new era – Reiwa 令和 with the new Emperor Naruhito 天皇德仁, who will become the 126th emperor of Japan.  Some interesting pens from Pilot is most likely to be in the making for the new era....

During this celebratory time in Japan when the cherry blossom blooms in the Spring airs with the country full of anticipation of a new dawn. 

At this moment, let us have a look at some interesting pens that were made for the royal family in the past.

Emperor Akihito 天皇明仁 of Japan is set to abdicate on 30 April 2019, which will make him the first Japanese Emperor to do so in over two centuries was crowned in November 1990. 

Pilot commemorated the event with a Limited edition of 1000 pieces of vest type fountain pens called the Sokuikinen HouOu alias The Pilot Coronation Pen 日皇登基

Both the cap and barrel is decorated with a flying phoenix in taka maki-e high relief lacquer, symbolizing eternity. Each pen is engraved with a special design on the 18kt gold nib.  Even the bottle cap is decorated with a maki-e phoenix too. 

Another fabulous collection is the balance shaped, Pilot Gosyoguruma pen 御所车 【御所車】,  also known as the Pilot Royal Wedding Pen that was made in a limited edition of 1000 pieces to commemorate the royal wedding of Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako on 9 June 1993

The barrel is decorated with a motif a cow cart for the imperial family in Heiankyo c.794-1192 in high relief Japanese lacquer of taka maki-e; symbolizing loyalty and elegance.  While the confetti of cherry blossoms symbolizes the arrival of spring or early summer. Each pen is fitted with an 18kt gold nib and works with a cartridge converter.

Kyusai Yoshida 吉田久斋【吉田久齋】 was tasked to make this beautiful Gosyoguruma pen which is still well remembered by many pen collectors who still wanted to have this pen in their collection.
