Pelikan M800 Limited Edition Raden Royal Gold Fountain Pen
The first step to create the Pelikan M800 Limited Edition Raden Royal Gold Fountain Pen is to give the surface a deep black impression by using the special Japanese Urushi lacquer. Then the typical stripes are made with particles from the precious white mother of pearl shell. In a very sensitive way of treating the shell, the stripes are prepared. The shell is placed on the ground and flattened by hand with a hard stone into very thin sheets. The sheets are cut into narrow stripes and a 24 carat gold foil is carefully affixed one by one to the backside of the stripes. Raden is a traditional Japanese decorative craft mainly used for lacquer ware and woodwork. It is an extraordinary technique that inherits a perfect symbiosis of craftmanship and art. By working with small stripes of precious shell material, the artist of the Raden pen creates a beautiful , impressive piece of art. Each piece is truly unique. A very practiced hand is needed to place the individual stripes around the cap and the barrel of the M800 fountain pen. The stripes are fixed to it by a coating of laquer. Afterwards, the complete fountain pen is once again coated with laquer to protect the precious stripes. For a shiny finish, its surface is polished very carefully. Finally, the artist individual signs and numbers each fountain pen with the Makie technique, which used to be reserved exclusively for Japanese Royals as an indication of their power. With the limited edition Raden series, Pelikan applies this wonderful Japanese decorative craft to fountain pen models of its famous Souveraen series. In 1929, Pelikan registered the patent for the differential piston mechanism, a new fountain pen filling system allowing to carry a larger amount of ink inside the pen. The M800 is one the flagship products of the Souveraen series. The Raden M800 Royal Gold Fountain Pens are masterpieces with finely chased 18 carat gold nib in the size M, accentuated with a rhodium decor. Each fountain pen is encased in a traditional Japanese gift box which is made of Paulownia wood and Limited Edition of 388 pieces worldwide.
About Pelikan Pen
Pelikan is a global brand and was founded in Hanover in 1832. It is a German but Swiss-incorporated manufacturer of premium fountain pens and other writing, office and art equipments. Pelikan is also credited with the invention of the differential-piston filling method.
Pelikan "true" history began with the model "100" and the modified 100N (both fountain pens), which sparked the genesis of the company's distinctive styling.
The modern-day range includes a popular Souverän (meaning Sovereign) line which consists of the very small M300, small M400, medium M600, large M800 and oversized M1000. A new range of large, modern pens have recently been released called 'Toledo', are manufactured in two sizes in Toledo in Spain. The M700 Toledo is the same size as the (new-style) M400 and the M900 is the same size as the M800.
Pelikan is also credited for making Pelikan Special Edition Pens and Pelikan Limited Edition Pens since 1993. The first was the Blue Ocean, a transparent 'demonstrator' version of the M800 fountain pen.
The tradition of producing several Limited Editions showing German craftsmanship was also complemented by Pelikan Special Editions which are not produced in limited number, but for a limited time.
