Namiki Yukari Royal Chinkin Squirrel
In this Namiki Yukari Royal Chinkin Squirrel, the squirrel is shown in a playful and fluid movement. Using an extremely sharp tool, short lines of
senbori (lines) Chinkin and
denbori Chinkin (dots) are carved onto the pen barrel to create the profile of the squirrel.
Made by skilled artisan, the late Shouji Michikami, as his refine work of Chinkin
沉金 requires the thousands of lines and dots which define the squirrel's breast and its fluffy tail. As soon as the carving is done, precious gold powder are applied meticulously onto the pen to fill the engravings. Urushi lacquer is subsequently applied on the Namiki Yukari Royal Chinkin Squirrel fountain pen and allowed to dry in a dust free environment.
The motif of a
Squirrel is extremely popular in the Far East as it symbolizes good luck, wealth and agility. The nature of a squirrel is that of an accumulator as it gathers its food, usually nuts and acorns, to its natural habitate. Hence, it's status in the Japanese society has always been symbolic as the heritage of prosperity as it accummulates acorns in its dwellings.
Each Namiki Yukari Royal Chinkin Squirrel fountain pen is then fitted with a point size 20 18kt gold nib and presented in a paulounia wood box with an ink bottle.
