Pelikan Limited Edition M1000 Sunrise Raden Fountain Pen

Raden is a traditional Japanese decorative craft used for lacquer ware and woodwork.  The foundation pen, M1000 Raden Sunrise red, is first painted in a deep red colour, using the special Japanese Urushi lacquer.  Then the colourful stripes are made with strips from the abalone shell, which originates in the Japanese Sea.

In the production process, the shell is placed on the ground and flattered with a hard stone into very thin sheets.  These sheets are cut into narrow strips and then affixed to the coating of lacquer around the cap and the barrel of the M1000 fountain pen.

Afterward, the fountain pen is once again coated with lacquer, and then the surface is polished.

With the Maki-e technique, which used to be reserved exclusively for Japanese Royals as an indication of their power, the artist individually signs and numbers each fountain pen.

In 1929,  Pelikan registered the patent for the piston mechanism, a new fountain pen filling system.  This technique, refined and updated, is still used today.  The M1000 is ideal for people who write a lot as it has the biggest ink capacity of any piston fountain pen in the market today.

The Pelikan fountain pen M1000 Sunrise red are masterpieces with finely-chased 18 carat gold nibs in the size F, accentuated with a rhodium decor.

Each fountain pen is encased in a traditional Japanese gift box which is made of Paulownia wood.

The Pelikan Limited Edition M1000 Sunrise Raden Fountain Pen is available in a limited edition of 333 pieces worldwide.

About Pelikan

Pelikan is a Malaysian company that manufactures fountain pens in Germany and Spain as well as other writing, office and art equipment. Credited with the invention of the differential-piston filling method, the original company was founded in Hanover in 1832 before it went bankrupt and restarted.  Pelikan A.G. is now a Malaysian owned, Swiss incorporated subsidiary of Pelikan International.

The notable history of Pelikan began with the model "100" and the modified 100N (both fountain pens), which sparked the genesis of the company's distinctive styling.

Pelikan is notable adherence to tradition in pen manufacturing, preserving the then innovative methods and styles of its founding company.  Pelikan's newer lines of re-released pens have deviated very little except to vary the sizes and coatings. It still manufactures many pens using cellulose acetate, instead of the more modern plastics used by most other major pen makers.
