The Extraordinary Tomihiro Murakami Collection
Collectors of maki-e pens would have definitely come across the book written by Mr Tomihiro Murakami: Dunhill-Namiki and Lacquer Pens: Maki-e Pens Guidebook.
Every pen or desk accessory within this book is a gem that has taken Mr Murakami years to search, collect, catalogue and keep in safe custody. Tremendous amount of time and effort was expensed to ensure the owner of this collection would be truly honoured to lay claim to it.
When Mr Murakami was approached to ask if he wanted to part with his collection, his affinity for it far exceeded any temptation to part with it for a good price. Months later, however, he did decide to part with the entire collection, because he wanted to groom his son as a professional Go (a form of Japanese chess) player.
The rest of what happened sounds like a movie. The pens eventually arrived in Elephant & Coral where everyone in the boutique was stunned by the beauty and comprehensiveness of how these pens were collected and safekept.
Like a foster mother, Elephant & Coral eventually had to pass on this beautiful baby to the rightful owner. However, the beauty of the Murakami Collection will live on forever in the memory of everyone at Elephant & Coral.
