Namiki Setsugekka Limited Edition
Transient Beauty of Japanese Seasons
Setsugekka – a term recognised and commonly incorporated in Waka poems as a literary allusion of the ever-changing seasons, the term was also referenced in the popular Makura no Soshi, or ‘The Pillow Book’, by Japanese court lady Sei Shonagon since the Heian period (8th – 12th century).
Namiki captures and immortalises the transient beauty of Japan’s seasons as well as aesthetic appreciation in the lives of people, with the release of Namiki Setsugekka Limited Edition Fountain Pen.
Literally translated as ‘Snow Moon Flower’, Setsugekka is one of ancient Japan‟s classic expressions and a symbolic word representing the natural beauty of its seasonal features: “Snow in Winter”, “Moon in Autumn” and “Flowers in Spring”. Passed down through the ages, Setsugekka today holds dual mean-ings: an admiration for breath-taking sceneries and an expression for traditional Japanese beauty. Beyond that, the true essence of Setsugekka is manifested in the elegant spirit of the Japanese people today, whose foundation of beauty has been shaped by this concept.
The Setsugekka motif is gracefully captured in the latest Namiki Limited Edition Setsugekka Fountain Pen. The theme of „winter‟ is depicted by the falling snow crystals and Japanese traditional snowflakes designs, while silver Tsuyu-dama or dewdrops are also encased on the pen to subtly represent the beautiful spectacle of snow-falling. A full moon is decorated on top of the cap, and further embellished with gradated sprinkles of silver powder to portray the whimsical dance of the moonlight trail for „autumn‟. For „spring‟, fresh beginnings are represented by golden-glazed Sakura cherry blossoms in full bloom.
Featuring a pen body of the Emperor Vest type, the writing instrument is meticulously handcrafted by skilled Namiki artisan, Michifumi, who employs the exquisite Togidashi Taka (Burnished-Raised) method, alongside a range of other refined Maki-e techniques to create the beautiful writing instrument.
In addition, the collectible pen features a precision 18-karat gold nib with rhodium accents and piston ink deliv-ery system which ensures first-class writing quality and long-lasting performance. A special ink bottle has been specially designed to complete the majestic presentation.
Elegantly presented in a gift box whose lid is finely decorated using the Raden (Mother-of Pearl) technique. Limited to only 99 pieces worldwide, the writing instrument is truly a masterpiece that will be embraced by fine pen collectors and connoisseurs.
