Namiki Dancing Beauty Limited Edition
Green Urushi lacquer itself is extremely rare to be seen among Japanese art forms and application. The Namiki Dancing Beauty Limited Edition fountain pen features a lady courtesan with a green base urushi lacquer coating reminiscent of the fields and hills of Spring. This green colour is obtained by grinding limpet shells into a fine powder, which is then sprinkled on the pen body.
The green lacquer is then coated with further layers of urushi and polished to reveal the green colour beneath. An extremely rare choice of colour for such prinkled picture techniques.
The motif of a Dancing Beauty on the Namiki Dancing Beauty Limited Edition is rare too. In many of the maki-e fountain pens, very few image of figurines are found among them. Using taka maki e (high relief lacquering technique) for the figurine while the Sakura blossoms are depicted using various techniques of kiri kane cut gold to illustrate the streams of water in the foreground and silver and raden (abalone shells) are inlaid into the flowers. The entire piece of work is indeed a good representation of the sophisticated Hyomon technique.
Only 75 pieces were ever made worldwide. Each pen is hand made, signed by the Urushi artisan and bears its own serial number. This pen is of immense artistic and collectible value.
