Tabane-Noshi, or noshi bundles, are long thin strips of dried abalone used to wrap gifts for offerings at the Japanese Shinto rituals. Today, it is commonly used as a decorative embellishment for gifts at auspicious occasions and festivities, very often on formal items. The unique noshi bundles usually come in colourful geometric and floral patterns. The word ‘noshi’ sounds similar to the Japanese character for ‘expansion’ or ‘progress’. Hence, it is regarded as an auspicious symbol that represents the continuation of the family line. This symbolic charm is also commonly embroidered on Japanese garments and kimonos to repel the evil forces.
